Barbell Coaching in the Austin Area
Never touched a barbell?
That's exactly who this is for.
Simple, proven strength training for adults of any age and any fitness level. Start with a session in person, then train on your own schedule with me coaching you every week. You don't need to get in shape first. That's the whole point.
No sales pitch. No commitment. Just a straight conversation.

If you haven't exercised in years, you're in the right place.
Let's be honest about who this is for.
Maybe you haven't done anything physical since high school. Maybe you sit at a desk all day and you've noticed that getting off the floor is harder than it used to be. Maybe you bought a gym membership in January and went four times. Maybe you've never picked up a barbell in your life and the idea of walking into a weight room makes you want to close this page.
Good. Keep reading.
You do not need to be fit to start. You do not need to lose weight first. You do not need to "get in shape" before you begin — getting in shape is what this is.
Every single person who has ever gotten strong started out weak. There is no other way to begin.
This is not what you're picturing.
When most people hear "barbell training," they picture something intimidating. Chalk dust, screaming, a guy in knee sleeves deadlifting 600 pounds. That is not this.
I do not train professional athletes.
I do not train Olympic weightlifters.
I do not train competitive powerlifters.
I train normal people who want to be stronger than they are right now.
Here's what you will never get from me:
- No bootcamps
- No endless cardio circuits
- No random workouts that change every day
- No burpees, no "beast mode," no grinding you into the ground
- No screaming, no ego, no judgment
- No assumption that you already know what you're doing
The simplest thing that works.
The fitness industry sells complexity because complexity is easy to sell. New machines, new classes, new programs every six weeks. It feels productive. It rarely makes you measurably stronger.
We do the opposite. We train four lifts:
Squat. Deadlift. Press. Bench.
That's it. Those four movements train your entire body, and they're not random exercises — they're the things your body was built to do:
- Squat — sit down and stand back up
- Deadlift — pick something up off the ground safely
- Press — put something up on a high shelf
- Bench — push something away from you
You already do these every day. We just make you dramatically better at them.
And because we can add weight to a barbell in small increments, we can make you a little stronger every single session. That's not a slogan — it's arithmetic. Five pounds at a time adds up faster than you think.
You will get stronger faster than you expect.
Here's the part nobody tells beginners: being new is an advantage.
A beginner can add weight to the bar almost every workout. An advanced lifter fights for five extra pounds over an entire year. You are at the start of the steepest part of the curve, and it is the most rewarding training of your entire life.
Most people who start with me are lifting weights they didn't believe they could touch within a couple of months. Not because of anything special about them — because the program is simple, the progression is deliberate, and somebody is watching their technique.
That window doesn't stay open forever. It's open right now.
How coaching works.
Step 1 — Your First Session, Free and In Person
There's no substitute for having somebody put hands on you the first time you squat. Your first session is on me — no charge, no obligation to continue. We do it together in one of two places: my private garage gym in Lago Vista, or your own setup, if you already have a rack and a barbell. One session and you'll have the movement patterns, the setup, and the confidence to train on your own.
Serving Lago Vista, Cedar Park, Leander, Jonestown, Lakeway, Round Rock, Georgetown, and the greater Austin area.
Step 2 — Ongoing Coaching, On Your Schedule
Your programming lives in TurnkeyCoach, a purpose-built barbell coaching app. Here's the loop:
- 1.I write your program. Individual to you — your age, your starting point, your equipment, your schedule.
- 2.You train and film your sets. Your phone propped against a water bottle is fine.
- 3.You film the last set of your lifts. I send back a custom video where you watch yourself lift while I show you what's working and what to fix — so you're better by your next session.
- 4.I adjust your program based on what actually happened, not what was supposed to happen.
You can do this in a commercial gym, a garage gym, or anywhere with a barbell and a rack. If you don't know what equipment you need, that's one of the things we'll figure out on the call.
Investment: $195/month. No contract, no signup fee, cancel anytime.
Here's what a video breakdown actually looks like.

What clients say
5.0 ★★★★★ on Google
"At 67, I started strength training for the first time this year and I couldn't have asked for a better coach... He carefully explains each exercise, prioritizes proper warm-ups and safety, and makes sure I am building strength without risking injury... Thanks to David, I'm getting stronger and more confident... I highly recommend him as a strength coach, especially for older adults who may be hesitant to start strength training!"
"I hadn't lifted weights since high school and was concerned about proper form to avoid injury. He got my form dialed to perfection and helped me build my confidence... Under his guidance I was able to reach the 1100 lb club which is far beyond any goal I had set for myself."
"Fantastic strength coaching. Very sustainable long term approach. Thanks to Davids coaching ive come a long long way with my strength training!"
This is for you if:
- You've never lifted, or you lifted years ago and stopped
- You're 25 or you're 75 — age is a programming variable, not a disqualifier
- You're out of shape and tired of being told to fix that before you start
- You want strength you can actually measure, not a vague feeling of having exercised
- You've tried other programs and quit because they were miserable
- You want somebody to tell you exactly what to do, so you can stop guessing
This is probably not for you if:
- — You're a competitive lifter looking to peak for a meet
- — You want a bodybuilding or physique-contest program
- — You want fast weight loss without training
- — You want to be entertained rather than coached
I'd rather tell you that now than take your money.
About Coach David Gracy
I'm a barbell strength coach based in Lago Vista, Texas, and I coach beginners across the Austin area.
I'm not a personal trainer. I'm not going to count your reps while you watch TV, and I'm not going to invent a new workout every week to keep you entertained. I coach one thing, and I coach it properly: the fundamental barbell lifts, run on a simple progression that has worked for decades.
I work with beginners on purpose. It's the population that gets ignored by the fitness industry and it's the population where good coaching makes the biggest difference. When somebody who hasn't exercised in fifteen years deadlifts 185 pounds for the first time, that changes how they walk around in the world. That's the job.
If you're nervous about starting, that's normal, and it's not a reason to wait. Book a call and we'll talk about it.
